Cali's Rough March

It’s not even halfway through March and Cali has already had a rough go of it. We got our first taste of somewhat scary cat situations when she developed an open wound on her rump overnight. Our vet had no availability for several days and advised us to visit one of the emergency vets in the area. After about an hour of calling around to various emergency vets and finding no availability, we found one that had walk in hours starting at 7pm. I was very nervous about waiting that long (since we did all the calling around in the morning), but there didn’t seem to be any other options. We did our best to keep her comfortable and from messing with the wound all day and dropped her off at the emergency vet that evening.

A very nice vet did a phone consultation with us (since you obviously can’t go inside with your fur baby right now) and informed us that Cali had an anal gland that got infected and ruptured - the open wound we saw was actually her body doing exactly what it needed to do to drain out the infection and begin to heal. The vet and his team cleaned up her wound and sent her home with some medication to prevent infection and care instructions for her fairly freaked out parents. She has to wear a cone for at least two weeks and be kept separate from the other cats to prevent them from trying to groom her wound (which is fine by her - she doesn’t get along with them anyway). We’ve been closely monitoring her wound and it seems to be heading in the right direction so far. I think the worst part has been her cone - she has trouble navigating with it since she bangs into things and that seems to be making her pretty mopey (she may also be a little dramatic like me…). All in all she is trending in the right direction though - always exciting times with cats at our house!
