Spiral Floor Cushion

I like to sit on the floor next to the coffee table when I drink a hot beverage or eat, but sometimes it’s really uncomfortable to sit like that for an extended period of time. The boyfriend pillow that I took to college with me many moons ago worked as a floor cushion for a while, but I decided it was time for something new. I crocheted a spiral as a stash buster for some leftover mandala yarn that I didn’t know how else to use. Bonus: this cushion doubles as a cat bed (and by that I mean I crocheted this for myself, but my cats think I made it for them - shocker).

A few notes:

  • The pattern below is based on the notes I made when creating this cushion. Please let me know if you come across something that doesn’t make sense and I’ll do my best to update.

  • I intended this project to be a stash buster meaning that you will need to adjust your hook as needed for whatever yarn you choose to use in addition to the measurements you are trying to achieve.

Materials:

  • 4 mm crochet hook (adjust as needed for the yarn you choose to use)

  • Mandala yarn

    • I used Lion Brand Mandala in Gnome as well as a little bit of Lion Brand Cupcake in Clown Car when the Gnome ran out (but please use whatever yarn you’d like and adjust as needed!)

  • Black yarn for the edging (feel free to use the same yarn you used for everything else - I just liked the contrast of this color)

  • Stuffing (I recycled the stuffing from some old pillows)

Terminology:

  • Ch - chain

  • Sl st - slip stitch

  • Sc - single crochet

  • Lhdc - linked half double crochet

  • Ldc - linked double crochet

  • Increase - 2 of the designated stitch in the next stitch

Side Panel

Crochet one side panel that will be used to connect the two spiral panels. You’ll need to know the total number of stitches around the edge of your spiral panel so that you can match the length. You’ll build this side panel up to your desired height.

Row 1: ch the total number of stitches around your spiral panel plus 1, sc in 2nd ch from hook all the way across. Mine was ch 350, sc in 2nd ch from hook all the way across (349)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc across (349)

Repeat row 2 to desired height (mine was 28 rows high total)

Assembly:

  1. Attach the side panel to one of the spiral panels by single crocheting around the edge. I did this by aligning the panels with wrong sides together and the spiral panel facing me to ensure the single crochet would be seen from the top.

  2. Sew the vertical seam of side panel closed

  3. Attach the open edge of the side panel to second spiral panel by single crocheting around the edge the same way you did for the first panel. Stop one set of stitches before the end to stuff.

  4. Stuff your cushion (I used 4 old pillows worth of stuffing)

  5. Finish single crocheting the second spiral panel to the side panel and close off.
