Over Hat Ear Warmer

A Boston hat is part of Jeff’s regular attire, but it doesn’t do much to keep him warm in the winter. He discovered the twisted ear warmer I made for myself back in 2022 and started wearing it over his hat. I thought it was cute until I wanted to wear it myself. The solution was clear - I needed to make him his own version that would fit over his hat.

I followed the instructions from Crochet With Carrie’s pattern with a few alterations. I made Jeff’s version in the round instead of a flat panel so I wouldn’t have to sew it closed. To do this, I chained 80 then slip stitched into the 1st chain to create a circle. I then continued to follow the pattern being sure to slip stitch to close each round. Jeff thought this was a bit too holey to keep all the cold air out, so I added rounds as follows once the initial panel was as tall as I wanted so that I could double it by folding it over.

After your last round of the front panel (which should end on a repeat of row 3 from the pattern), follow these steps for the inside panel:

Round X: Ch1, turn, sc in blo around. Sl st into first stitch when you reach the end. (80)

Round Y: Ch1, do NOT turn, sc around. Sl st into first stitch when you reach the end. (80)

Repeat round Y until you match the height of the front portion. Fold the inner and outer panels so that the ends match up. We will now close with round Z.

Round Z: Ch1, sl st open edges of back and front panels together to close. (80)

The end product looks nice and Jeff has been pretty happy with it. I also got my ear warmer back, so thumbs up all around!
